💧 Choosing a Print Style: SuperSoft vs. Bold

At Real Thread, we're pretty well-known for printing our super soft custom t-shirts with water-based and discharge inks as opposed to plastisol inks, which are the industry standard.

Without getting too technical, you can think of water-based ink as an ink that sinks into the fabric of the t-shirt, rather than sitting on top of it. So it leaves an incredibly soft, breathable print that doesn't crack or peel over time.

Plastisol ink, on the other hand, yields an incredibly vibrant print result, but often has a rough, scratch-y feel to it, and begins to crack after a couple of washes.

Rather than spend too much time on plastisol ink, we'll look at the difference between Real Thread's two water-based print styles: SuperSoft and Bold.

At Real Thread, we’re known for our SuperSoft ink, a water-based ink that literally dyes the fabric of your t-shirt instead of sitting on top of it.

The ink removes the color of the fabric, replacing it with the color of the ink. The agent (known as discharge) only removes the color in the cotton though, meaning that 100% cotton t-shirts lend themselves to bright prints, while blends tend to have a cool, naturally vintage look.

SuperSoft is the right choice for you when you want a print that is incredibly soft and breathable. The print lasts a long time and is extremely comfortable. 

Our Bold ink is a high-opacity water-based ink that creates a slightly thicker print than SuperSoft. It has a bit of a feel to it, but results in an exceptionally vibrant print across all colors and fabric types.

Bold ink is the best option when you want incredibly vibrant colors that seem to jump off the shirt. It’s a bit heavier in feel than SuperSoft, but by no means scratchy or uncomfortable 

It works on absolutely any shirt fabric, meaning your results will be consistent, right down the Pantone you’ve selected for your design.

The fabric makeup of the t-shirt you choose is going to have a major effect on the look and feel of your t-shirt. When printing with water-based inks, each ink reacts differently with each different fabric type, so it’s helpful to understand how this process works.

This isn’t to say there aren’t exceptions. The brand you decide to use will play a big role in softness and quality as well (more on that to come), but generally, this order holds true.

Like we mentioned earlier, when printing with our Bold Ink, you'll get the same print result regardless of fabric type. When printing with our SuperSoft ink, though, the print result will vary widely based on which fabric type you choose.

As you can see, the vibrancy of the ink varies widely across fabric types — showing up at it’s brightest on 100% cotton, and looking rather heathered on tri-blends.

💁‍♀️ Best Women's T-Shirt Styles

Ordering women’s t-shirts is notoriously tricky. So, before we get into product recommendations for women’s t-shirts, we wanted to share a couple of pro-tips you’ll want to keep in mind when ordering women’s shirts.

Women’s tees notoriously run small, no matter what your body size is. This bring the case, we always encourage people to order a size larger than they normally would, regardless of body size. If you’re typically a small, consider ordering a size medium, or even a large if you want a loose, comfy fit.

Checking the dimensions of a t-shirt style can be really helpful when making a decision. Also, make sure you compare the women’s size chart to the unisex companion shirt to see what size you should wear. Since unisex sizing is more true to size, that’s the best place to start.

Doing your research and ordering a blank sample of a shirt you’re considering can be incredibly helpful in the buying process. That way, you can understand the fit and feel of a shirt for yourself.

The 8413 from Bella+Canvas is far and away one of the softest women's t-shirts out there. It's made out of Bella+Canvas' signature tri-blend material, giving it a cool, naturally heathered look. 

The fit is a little bit tighter than a lot of shirts, so if you do select this one, you may want to consider ordering a size larger than your normal fit.

The American Apparel 2102 is a tried-and-true classic in women's custom t-shirts. Stitched together with American Apparel's signature Fine Jersey fabric, this t-shirt has a snug, fashion fit. In screen printing, a new screen is created for each additional color or print location in a design, which requires additional materials and labor, increasing the price of your shirts. Keeping your color count and print locations low can end up saving you a good bit of money.

When buying t-shirts in bulk, you always want to be aware of the different price breaks and whether or not you’re close to one. 

Say your company has 45 employees. You could order 45 t-shirts, but if you were to add on five more, you’d hit the 50 piece price break, which would actually end up making your order less expensive overall, and you’d have five extra shirts to give out to friends or customers.

The black-on-black printing method results in a look that is as sleek as it is unique. Walking the line of boldness and simplicity, printing your design in black, on black is a surefire way to set your brand apart and make a statement! 

When it comes to black-on-black apparel printing, two important factors come into play: 💧the ink color and 👕 the shirt color. 

I know, I know—you’re thinking, “Color? We already decided on black for both. What else is there to choose?” Believe it or not, black-on-black printing isn’t as black-and-white as it seems. 

There are actually a variety of shades of black—in both garments and ink styles— so we need to pair up the right shirt color with the right ink color to get your desired result. 

Depending on the look you’re going for, we can achieve either a more subtle black-on-black print or one with more contrast!

Fun fact: In most cases, we don’t actually use black ink on a black shirt to achieve the black-on-black look. We've actually found that printing with black SuperSoft ink on a black shirt yields a result that is almost invisible...and we’re guessing you may want to actually be able to see your design🕵️

So to help you create the monochromatic garment of your dreams, we’ve compiled a few of our team’s top black-on-black printing recommendations!

If you’re looking for a more subtle black-on-black (BonB) print, we recommend using one of our SuperSoft inks on a dark or black shirt, like the black NLA 3600. When choosing this option, your ink color should be slightly lighter than the shirt color, to create a slight, subtle contrast. 

We recommend a light grey ink or an ink color that is a few shades down from the garment’s true black to achieve the best results. ‍

The slight difference between the dark shirt color and lighter ink color will create a noticeable tonal appearance. 

While we know this isn’t technically black ink on a black shirt, the finished black-on-black effect will still pack a punch, making a bold statement in a surprisingly simple way.

Since you're using our SuperSoft ink, the print will not have a feel to it at all! This type of ink literally soaks into the shirt fabric instead of sitting on top of it.

SuperSoft ink is the right choice for you when you want a lightweight shirt that is incredibly soft, durable and pliable. The print will last longer and won’t flake or crack over time. 

Another black-on-black (BonB) print option is to use a shirt color that is lighter than black with a dark or almost black print.

In this scenario, you'd still want to use a dark shirt color, like a NLA6210 in charcoal, but not necessarily a true black shirt like we mentioned in Chapter 1. 

When choosing this option, your ink color should be slightly darker than the shirt color. We recommend using a black ink or an ink color that is a few shades darker than the shirt color to achieve the best results.‍

This will be just enough contrast to create the ultimate BonB illusion 💫

In order to achieve this look we’d still use our SuperSoft inks. The ink dyes the fabric of your shirt, leaving it extraordinarily soft! The resulting print in this case will have a nice contrast with a super soft, clean matte finish. 

If you’re looking for a black-on-black print with as much contrast as possible, we recommend using our heavier, high-opacity ink. 

A high-opacity ink allows for more flexibility as far as the garment color you’re printing on goes—meaning you can use a true black garment as well as a true black ink. This is pretty much the only case where you’d want to print true black-on-black without sacrificing the visibility of your design.

The end result will be a matte finish and the design will have a heavier thicker print that you will be able to feel. 

Another option to achieve more shine, is to use a high-opacity gloss ink. Again, you can use a true black garment as well as a true black ink here.

Using high-opacity gloss ink is a unique method of printing. We start by printing your design in a high-opacity black ink, and then go back over it with a clear, high-gloss ink giving it that nice shiny finish! 💫

In this case, the final printed design sits on top of the shirt, rather than soaking into the fabric—so it will have a feel to it, but will leave you with a bright glossy finish that makes your design really pop!

‍Is this method right for you? If you're looking for a vibrant print that pops off the shirt and you're okay with a thicker print that has a bit of a feel to it, this is a good option. If you want a SuperSoft shirt with a more tonal look, then our team highly suggests using one of the first two options for black-on-black printing. 

If you’re looking for a way to create maximum impact while still maintaining a monochromatic look, another option is to play with texture. 

Custom foil printing is a fun and creative way to take the black-on-black print style to a whole new level, adding just the perfect amount of dimension to your design. 

Foil printing is a popular specialty print method that's guaranteed to make your design pop! It can be used alongside our SuperSoft inks, you can choose either a shiny or matte finish, and it can be applied to pretty much any apparel so your options are pretty limitless.

Foil printing is a method in which your design is first printed onto the garment with a special glue, and then black foil is adhered to the glue with a heat press. The combination of heat and pressure seals the foil before the excess is removed. The final ~shiny~ result is guaranteed to turn heads. 

‍If you choose this option, it’s important to note:  Properly-applied foil will last for a long while, but the shimmer and shine will fade with each wash. We highly recommend that you design with a distressed pattern to increase the lifespan and wearability of your foil printed shirts. Due to foil’s tendency to break down naturally over time, consider how much of it you want to use in your design.

A more durable, but less flashy way to add texture to your black-on-black design is with custom embroidery.  

Black thread can essentially be used on anything - shirts, jackets, hoodies, hats, tote bags and beyond - to achieve the perfect black-on-black look with embroidery! And it's made for quality that lasts!

The 6210 from Next Level is a tried and true classic. From a value standpoint, it’s hard to find a better shirt than this one. A cotton/polyester blend, this shirt is very soft, has a slim fit, and is offered at a great price point.

If you’re looking to up your t-shirt game with something that feels high-end without breaking the bank, this is undeniably a shirt you’ll want to consider.

The 100% version of the t-shirt listed above, the Next Level 3600 is another excellent t-shirt. Stitched together with Next Level’s ring-spun cotton, the 3600 is going to have a softer feel than most 100% cotton t-shirts.

Bella+Canvas is known for pushing the boundaries of fashion, but this shirt, the Canvas 3001, is about as classic and timeless as it gets.

Made with 100% airlume combed and ring-spun cotton, this t-shirt has a soft feel, and it shouldn’t shrink as much as most 100% cotton tees.

Though this t-shirt looks simple, Bella+Canvas continues to produce unique colorways that give you a seemingly endless array of options to choose from.

The Next Level 6010 is one of the softest t-shirts you will ever wear. It’s a tri-blend, meaning it’s made out of cotton, polyester, and rayon. Tri-blends are widely regarded as the softest t-shirt fabric out there.

The different fabrics in the shirt mean that the 6010 is going to naturally have a bit of a heathered look to it, making it a great option for more faded, vintage-style prints.

2019 The 3413 is Bella+Canvas’ version of the standard tri-blend crewneck.

This shirt only weighs 3.4oz, this shirt is going to feel light, have a slim, drape-y fit, but will still be plenty durable.

The Canvas 3413 feels quite similar to the Next Level 6010 listed above. However, it’s going to have a slightly slimmer fit in the shoulders and underarms. Plus, it’s offered in 44 color options, as opposed to 12 from its Next Level counterpart.

The Canvas 3001CVC gets a boost in this category because it didn’t exist before this year. A cotton/polyester blend, Bella+Canvas used to lump this shirt style under the parent umbrella of the 3001 until this year.

As is typical from Bella+Canvas, this shirt is offered in an array of stunning color options.

The Bella 6400 has taken off as our most popular women’s style of 2019, and we think we know why.

Ordering women’s t-shirts is notoriously tricky. Female bodies vary much more than male bodies, so it’s harder to have one catch-all fit. And, for some reason, women’s t-shirts always tend to have the same incredibly tight fit.

What’s great about the Bella 6400 is that it fits a bit more loosely than most women’s t-shirts, but it’s still distinctly a women’s cut, making it more flattering than a unisex t-shirts, which always ends up fitting somewhat baggy.

Trend #1: More people will opt for women’s cut shirts

We saw a slight uptick in women’s cut shirt this year, and we fully expect that to continue to rise into 2020. 

The lack of representation for women’s fit t-shirts is likely emblematic of a larger social issue, but as people act on making workplaces –– and society in general –– more inclusive, we’re optimistic that this means women’s t-shirts will be better-represented on this list next year.
