Negative space in design, is the space that surrounds certain elements of the object. The negative space draws attention to the positive space, or the design elements, of the subject. Here’s 4 reasons why negative space in graphic design is important and effective:
- It draws attention to the focal point in your design.
- It creates a depth to your design.
- It brings balance and flow to your design.
- It can be used to place a hidden image in your design.
But more importantly, negative space designs can actually create the illusion of having another color in your t-shirt design! When you’re designing your image, keep in mind the color of the shirt. Using negative space in design is a great way to add a color without the cost, as well as create a cohesive feel to your design.
Design tip: The smallest negative space designs we can print is 1.3 points. If you decide to go smaller, then try using a texture to hide any elements that might close up.
